The Great “SECRET” to Success
As a Peak Performance Coach, I am proud to share with you one of the greatest lessons I have ever learned about success. I actually learned this lesson from my step father who was a very successful Dale Carnegie facilitator back in the late 70s and early 80s; and it has been the number one factor in my being able to achieve so many amazing goals in my own life.
In fact, my good friend, Ruben Gonzalez, who is a three time Olympian; (Soon to be 4 time) confirmed to me at Starbucks one morning that it was the number one thing that has allowed him and all Olympic athletes to become champions.
My friend, Billionaire Bill Bartman, says it is what allowed him and all successful business entrepreneurs to become highly successful.
Are you ready for the answer? All right, here we go…the number one thing that you can begin doing right now is…Choose.
That’s right; I said “choose.” That’s because success happens in a single instant.
Let me explain. The results you achieve in an endeavor are not the attainment of success; they are simply the confirmation of it. The reality is you become a champion long before the results show. As I said, success happens in an instant, the very moment you choose to do the things you need to do to be great and then continue each and every moment to choose to do those things.
Notice I said every moment? That’s because to be great you must stay in the moment. You can’t be thinking about the past; it’s over. And you can’t be thinking about the future. Instead, you must focus on the present moment and choose to do what needs to be done. You must understand that the future is created right now by the actions you are taking today.
We have come to believe that success happens when someone receives the award such as a gold medal or salesman of the year. But I am here to tell you, without a doubt, that greatness is not achieved when the result is recognized but rather when the individual chose to do the things he knows he needs to do.
Let’s consider an Olympic athlete like my good friend Ruben Gonzalez. They don’t become great when they break the record or win the medal. That just happens to be when the world recognizes it. It’s the evidence of their greatness. They actually became great when they took the extra actions needed and choose to do those actions over and over. For the swimmer and runner, it happens when they decide to do the extra laps. Greatness is found in the EXTRA’s. Extra time and effort put into doing the things they need to do to be great.
One of the most profound truths in life is that the difference between mediocrity and greatness is a very slim margin when being measured by the day or week. But the results in six months to a year are absolutely amazing.
Success is never about the big things you need to do. It’s about the small things that are done consistently, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. That’s why you must create the habits of doing the little things consistently.
Successful people have created the habit of doing the things that mediocre people are not willing to do.
If you’re in sales, then your rise from mediocrity to greatness can be found in making a few more calls each day before you leave the office or on your way home. It’s found in setting just a couple more opening appointments each week. It’s found in asking a few more people for referrals. As you can see, on a daily basis this doesn’t amount to much. But in time the results are amazing.
No matter where you are in your business right now, no matter what your performance has been, it can all change RIGHT NOW. It’s called a choice. You know what actions you need to do to be successful in your business. So choose to do them. Begin today. Right now, write down the things you need to do and then commit to doing them. Tell someone about your choice and allow them to help you be accountable for the actions you need to do.
Choose to do those extra things today, tomorrow and every day. In time, they will become easier for you to do and will become a part of your every day routine.
Remember this, what makes one great is developing the discipline of doing the extra things you need to do and then choosing to do them every day, whether you feel like it or not.
There is no difference between you and the number one person in your organization other than this one thing…CHOICE.
So, from this day forward take 100% responsibility for where you are in life. If you don’t like it, then choose to be a champion and begin doing the EXTRA’s that will make you a champion. It’s your choice.
